The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Arif Virani, has announced the appointment of Mark T. Mossey as a judge of the Nunavut Court of Justice.
Justice Mossey has served as the executive legal officer at the Office of the Chief Justice of the Nunavut Court of Justice for several years. Before this role, he worked as a poverty and civil law counsel at Maliganik Tukisiniarvik Legal Services in Iqaluit from 2010 to 2015, providing legal services to Nunavut residents.
His academic contributions include teaching civil procedure, trial advocacy, and a course on poverty, equality, and the law at the University of Saskatchewan's College of Law's Nunavut Law Program in Iqaluit during the 2019 and 2020 academic years.
Justice Mossey earned a Bachelor of Arts (with distinction) from the University of Alberta in 2000 and a Bachelor of Laws from Queen's University in 2003. In 2018, he completed a Master of Laws degree (with merit) focusing on constitutional and human rights law at the London School of Economics. He was called to the Ontario bar in 2004 and the Nunavut bar in 2010.
He actively participated in the Law Society of Nunavut and the Federation of Law Societies, taking on various leadership roles and contributing to their initiatives. He served as president of the Law Society of Nunavut in 2014 and was elected second vice president to the Federation's executive in the fall of 2024.
Justice Mossey will take over the position previously held by Justice S. Cooper, who was appointed as Chief Justice of the Nunavut Court of Justice on November 27, 2024.
Minister Virani expressed his support for Justice Mossey's appointment, wishing him success in his new role and conveying confidence in his ability to serve the people of Nunavut as a member of the Nunavut Court of Justice.
