Sander Duncanson becomes managing partner of Osler's Calgary office

Sander Duncanson has become the managing partner of Osler’s Calgary office as of January 1.

He is presently national co-chair of the firm’s regulatory, Indigenous and environmental practice, and has been with Osler for 15 years. Duncanson succeeds Brian Thiessen, who has held the position since 2020.

“Bringing on a leader like Sander, who is dialed into the major regulatory and energy industry matters that impact Western Canada (and our nation), serves to further highlight Osler’s deep expertise and the exceptional client service for which we are well known,” said Maureen Killoran, Osler’s national co-chair, in a statement.

Duncanson started with the firm’s Calgary office as an articling student. He presently concentrates on securing regulatory approvals for infrastructure and natural resource projects and on acting for regulated utilities in tolls and tariffs-related disputes. He also represents project developers and handles matters in the energy, mining and transportation spaces.

He will remain a practising lawyer as he manages Osler’s Calgary office.

“Sander is very well positioned to assume the role of Calgary office managing partner. He has the drive, focus and in-depth knowledge of our clients, our business and the legal environment in Western Canada. There is every reason to expect that he will enable Osler to build on the growth and success of our firm in Western Canada,” Thiessen said in a statement.

Thiessen will stay on as an employment partner this year. He intends to run for Calgary mayor in the October municipal elections.

“We wish to thank Brian for his exceptional leadership as the Calgary office managing partner over the last four years. Not only did Brian lead us through unprecedented growth, he did so tirelessly, always with a strong sense of fun, team play and inspirational energy. We are stronger because of Brian’s enormous efforts and owe him a debt of gratitude,” Killoran said.
